Over the past 18 years I have worked in Franchise Sales & New Franchisor Development. I have also been a multi unit Franchise owner and multi brand Franchise owner.

I have personally helped over 450 entrepreneurs start a Franchise business. I know the industry, I know how the inside workings operation, I know what really happens on both sides of the relationship.

Not long ago, after losing a 6 unit Franchise deal and a 3 unit Franchise deal in the same month, right after the potential buyers talked with existing Franchisees, I started thinking that what I thought my existing Franchisees were saying might be different than what they were actually saying.

So I paid someone to “do validation” as if they were considering buying the Franchise.

They sat through my presentation, they read through my FDD, they talked with me about the Franchise business and then they called existing Franchisees to ask them questions about the Franchise as if they were looking at buying a Franchise.

Through this process I found 2 very important things.

The First thing I learned was that I was correct, what I thought the Franchisees were saying was significantly different than what they were actually saying to potential Franchise owners.

Had I known this information in advance my discussions may have been different. Shame on me for not knowing what my Franchisees were actually saying vs what I thought they were saying.

The Second thing I learned was that the validation process was difficult to train. I had to spend hours and hours training someone to “do validation” because they were not familiar with the process, they didn’t understand the terminology, they didn’t know what questions to ask and they didn’t know how to follow up to the answers they received.
